How to Verify Before You Enroll or Schedule

Insurance network status changes at every open enrollment period (November 1 – January 15). The information on this page reflects what was verified in March 2026. Before acting on any of it:

  • Call the center's billing department directly and ask whether your specific plan and plan type (marketplace/exchange) is accepted — not just the insurer name. A carrier may be contracted for employer plans but not exchange products.
  • Confirm the specific surgeon is in-network, not just the hospital. Hospital and physician billing are often separate contracts.
  • Use your state marketplace's provider search tool to verify the center appears in-network for your plan before enrolling.
  • Get it in writing — or at minimum note the date, rep name, and reference number of any verification call.

Center-by-Center Detail

The summary table above gives the status. This section gives the reasoning — which plans, which caveats, and what to do next for each center.

Memorial Sloan Kettering — New York, NY  ⚠ Conditional

MSK accepts ACA marketplace plans, but the list of qualifying issuers is extremely narrow. Only three insurers qualify for standard Qualified Health Plans (QHPs):

  • Emblem Health
  • Fidelis Care
  • Healthfirst

The Essential Plan (lower-income NY exchange product) additionally includes Anthem BlueCross BlueShield HealthPlus.

What is not accepted: BCBS standard plans, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna, and most other major carriers are not contracted with MSK for exchange products. This is a long-standing, documented limitation — it has been reported since at least 2017 and remained in place as of March 2026.

Action: If you are shopping for coverage specifically to access MSK, you must select a plan from one of the three QHP issuers above through the NY State of Health marketplace. If you already have a different carrier, call MSK at 646-497-9176 to confirm your specific plan before scheduling.

MD Anderson Cancer Center — Houston, TX  ✕ Does Not Accept

MD Anderson does not accept any ACA marketplace insurance plans. This is a blanket exclusion — not plan-specific or carrier-specific. If your only coverage is through a state or federal health exchange, MD Anderson is not accessible for in-network care.

For non-ACA patients: MD Anderson remains the highest-volume CRS+HIPEC center in the world with the strongest published CRC-PM outcomes data. If you carry employer-sponsored insurance, a union plan, or private commercial coverage, confirm network status directly at their insurance page.

Chart consultation: Self-pay chart review is available at $1,116. No remote option. This remains a viable path for a second opinion even if surgery there is not feasible under your coverage.

Verified Mar 2026 — confirmed directly during patient intake process

Mercy Medical Center (Dr. Armando Sardi) — Baltimore, MD  ✕ Does Not Accept

Mercy Medical Center does not accept ACA marketplace insurance. Dr. Sardi has performed over 1,000 HIPEC procedures and runs one of the highest-volume programs in the United States. The insurance limitation is specific to marketplace products — non-ACA coverage should be verified directly.

Chart consultation: $500. This is one of the lower chart consult costs among top-tier centers and is accessible regardless of insurance status, making Sardi a viable second-opinion option even if surgery there is ruled out.

Action: Contact Dr. Sardi's office to confirm current chart consult process and pricing.

Wake Forest Baptist / Atrium Health — Winston-Salem, NC  ✓ Accepted

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist participates in the North Carolina ACA marketplace with the following plans for 2026:

  • Ambetter of North Carolina (with Atrium Health)
  • AmeriHealth Caritas Next
  • Blue Local (with Atrium Health)
  • Oscar Health
  • UnitedHealthcare

Caveat: Not all plans are available in every county. Confirm your county is covered before enrolling. Use the federal marketplace plan finder with your ZIP code.

Action: Call Atrium Health Customer Service at 877-938-7497 to confirm a specific plan includes the Winston-Salem surgical oncology program before scheduling.

Yale Cancer Hospital (Dr. Kiran Turaga) — New Haven, CT  ✓ Accepted

Yale Medicine participates in the Connecticut ACA marketplace through two exchange-specific plans:

  • Anthem Exchange
  • ConnectiCare Exchange

Caveat: Yale Medicine's insurance page notes that individual physicians may be exceptions to the group-level contract. Confirm that Dr. Turaga specifically is in-network under your plan before scheduling. Consult pricing runs $256.75 for 30 minutes and $412.75 for 60 minutes.

Action: Enroll through Access Health CT (Connecticut's marketplace). Call 203-785-3577 to verify Turaga's network status under your specific plan.

Moffitt Cancer Center (Dr. Sean Dineen) — Tampa, FL  ✓ Accepted

Moffitt accepts Florida Blue ACA marketplace plans. Specifically:

  • Florida Blue BlueCare (ACA plan)
  • Florida Blue BlueOptions (ACA plan)

Moffitt maintains a dedicated health exchange page and proactively publishes which marketplace plans they accept — a useful signal that they're accustomed to working with exchange patients.

Important distinction: Moffitt exited BCBS Medicare Advantage networks as of January 2025. This affects Medicare Advantage patients only and does not impact ACA marketplace plan holders.

Action: Enroll in a Florida Blue plan through healthcare.gov. Contact Moffitt's Financial Clearance Unit at FCUinsuranceNavigator@Moffitt.org or 813-745-7300 to confirm current network status.

Mayo Clinic Rochester (Dr. Travis Grotz) — Rochester, MN  ⚠ Conditional

Mayo Clinic Rochester does accept ACA marketplace plans, but access depends heavily on which insurer and which specific plan product. The confirmed individual/family marketplace option is:

  • Medica with Mayo Clinic (Individual & Family Business plans) — purpose-built plan sold on MNsure, Minnesota's state exchange. This is the safest, most explicitly designed path.

Additional insurers contracted with Mayo Clinic that also offer MNsure marketplace products:

  • BCBS Minnesota — select plans only. Not all BCBS MN products are contracted. Verify the specific plan product before enrolling.
  • UCare — commercial/select plans. UCare sells marketplace plans on MNsure; verify your specific product is contracted.

What is not contracted: HealthPartners is a major MNsure insurer but is not on Mayo Clinic's contracted plans list. If you are on a HealthPartners marketplace plan, Mayo Clinic Rochester is out-of-network.

Note on Medicare Advantage: Mayo Clinic is exiting most Medicare Advantage networks in MN, IA, and WI as of January 2026. This does not affect ACA marketplace plans.

Action: Shop plans at MNsure.org. Use the provider network lookup to confirm Mayo Clinic Rochester appears in-network for your selected plan. Medica with Mayo Clinic is the lowest-risk option if you are choosing coverage specifically for access to Mayo.

Johns Hopkins Medicine (Dr. Fabian Johnston) — Baltimore, MD  ⚠ Conditional

Johns Hopkins participates in the Maryland ACA marketplace through:

  • CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield — Maryland's dominant marketplace insurer. A multiyear agreement was renewed in October 2022 and remains in effect. CareFirst marketplace plans sold through Maryland Health Connection are the primary confirmed access path.

Critical caveat — UnitedHealthcare: As of August 25, 2025, UnitedHealthcare dropped Johns Hopkins Medicine from its network entirely — all providers, all facilities, including Fabian Johnston and Johns Hopkins Hospital. If your marketplace plan is through UHC, Johns Hopkins is out-of-network.

Action: Enroll in a CareFirst plan through Maryland Health Connection. Avoid UHC plans if Hopkins access is a priority. Confirm plan and surgeon network status at 410-955-2257 before scheduling.

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center (Dr. M. Haroon Choudry) — Pittsburgh, PA  ⚠ Conditional

UPMC Hillman accepts ACA marketplace plans from at least the following insurers on the Pennsylvania exchange:

  • UPMC Health Plan — UPMC's own insurer, sold on the PA exchange. Bronze, Silver, and Gold tiers available. Lowest-risk option for guaranteed in-network access.
  • Highmark — Marketplace plans give in-network access to UPMC specialty hospitals, including Hillman, under a longstanding arrangement.

Pennsylvania had 14 insurers offering exchange products in 2026. For carriers beyond UPMC Health Plan and Highmark, UPMC's billing page does not publish a definitive list and requires direct verification.

Action: If UPMC access is a priority, UPMC Health Plan is the most direct option. Enroll through healthcare.gov. For other carriers, call UPMC Managed Care at 412-623-5849 to confirm network status before enrolling.
